At Desert Dog Project, our goal is to provide funds for dogs in medical need, ensuring that every dog, especially those who face medical challenges in the shelter world, has a fair shot at a happy and fulfilling life. No dog should be denied this opportunity due to the financial burden of medical costs, which unfortunately is a problem we see far too often in the rescue world.

We are on a dedicated mission to raise funds for the most vulnerable and overlooked dogs in the system. As devoted volunteers with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, we have firsthand experience of the difficulties sick dogs encounter in their struggle to survive. It is our commitment to transform this reality by providing the financial support needed for their medical care.

We aim to eliminate financial barriers that prevent deserving dogs from finding loving homes. We strive to ensure that lack of funds is never the reason they miss out on the chance for a better life.

Why is there such a need for shelter advocacy in Maricopa County?

Maricopa County is uniquely impacted by the nationwide dog overpopulation crisis. Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) takes in the second most stray and surrendered dogs of ANY shelter in the entire country. At any given time, they have over 800 dogs in their care.

As a public shelter that is considered a government entity, unfortunately MCACC cannot rely on large donations that many private shelters benefit from. They also must legally take in any dog that comes through their doors (meaning they don’t have the privilege of turning dogs away when at capacity). This makes it very hard to provide adequate attention, care, and medical resources for MCACC dogs.
